معماری Rooftop Riverboat House Unveiled: A Room for London  Sailing through the clouds in a riverboat perched atop Queen Elizabeth Hall in London may sound like a strange and surreal dream, but some travelers are set to do just that as ‘A Room for London‘ opens to guests. The temporary boat-shaped apartment was commissioned by Living Architecture to celebrate the Olympic year of 2012.   The winner of a competition that saw entries from five hundred architects and artists from around the world, this design by David Kohn and Fiona Banner was inspired by the riverboat Roi des Belges, captained by Joseph Conrad in the Congo in 1890, which served as the basis of his novel Heart of Darkness.   A Room for London is “of no distinct era in terms of its style, neither recognizably modern nor old-fashioned,” Living Architecture notes. From its perch atop Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre, it proffers views of the Thames and will be a prime location from which to gaze out at the bustle of the city when the Summer Olympics start in June.   The riverboat room features an upper viewing deck and a striking magenta-and-turquoise interior including a double bedroom, kitchenette and library. The first run of bookings, which run through June, has already sold out, and the second run, for July through December, go on sale today, January 19th 2012. Want More? معماری Real Life Sim City: 3D Printers Turn Virtual to Reality  Remember SimCity 2000? It was so easy to waste hours and hours planning and building cities, then watching disasters befall the unfortunate citizens. But the problem was always that you had to eventually quit and go back to the real world. Thanks to a young architect with access to a 3D printer and a love for SimCity, the world now has a fantastic tabletop version of the game.  (all images via: Thingiverse) Using Google Sketch-Up to create the buildings, Thingiverse member Skimbal printed them out at 10X scale to allow for a greater level of detail.  Each building is printed on a little square base. All of the bases can fit together in a grid – just like in the game – to make a unique and colorful miniature city.  When the buildings are all printed, you can arrange and rearrange them just like you did during those endless hours playing SimCity. Skimbal was kind enough to post his Google Sketch-up files so that everyone with a 3D printer can make their own tabletop SimCity.  After you print your very own buildings, you can play Supreme Ruler and rain down all kinds of misery on the imaginary residents of your new locality. معماری Mirror, Mirror: Playground Pavilion Gets Funhouse Treatment  Children in Copenhagen have a little extra whimsy and fun added to their playground experience with the Mirror House, a pavilion and learning space used by kindergarten glasses. The gabled ends and doors of the structure are covered in warped funhouse mirrors.   Designed by Danish architects MLRP, the building is otherwise a minimalist black volume of the sort not often seen in projects designed for children. The exterior is clad in charred timber, and the doors feature convex and concave mirrors.   The steel ends of the buildings not only reflect the trees and the sky, seeming to enlarge this open natural space in the middle of a large city, but the rippling makes them fun to look at. Hopefully, the kids won’t be too traumatized by birds that are unfortunate enough to fly into the mirrored surfaces.  The architects say, “At night the shutters are closed making the building anonymous. During the day the building opens up, attracting the children who enjoy seeing themselves transformed in all directions. With simple means it has succeeded to transform an existing, sad and anonymous building to a unique and respectful installation in the newly renovated park.” Want More? معماری Life-Size Gingerbread House is a Wonka-Like Wonder  Imagine walking through a house made of waffles and gingerbread, plucking marshmallows and bourbon biscuits from the walls, gazing in amazement at rivers of frosting carrying colorful cupcakes. No, you’re not dreaming about Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory again – you’re one of the lucky ducks experiencing the Giant Edible Gingerbread House, an installation at the Brunswick Gallery in London.   There’s a sky of balloons, meringue clouds, a popcorn-popping chimney, a marshmallow marsh and a chandelier made of candied fruit. The exterior walls of the house were shingled in over 2500 tiles made of gingerbread, vanilla shortbread and chocolate shortbread.  And yes, all of the wonders in this incredible little house really were edible; the house was consumed over three days by a thousand children and their equally excited parents. When the house was near to collapsing, it was dismantled and used as compost to grow apple trees.  The Giant Edible Gingerbread House was commissioned by The Brunswick Center on behalf of Great Ormond Street Hospital, designed and built by the architecture firm Alma-nac. Infinity pools, also known as zero-edge pools, use glass walls or waterfall-like overspill troughs to achieve this sometimes vertigo-inducing effect. These 15 particularly scenic infinity pools will have you daydreaming about booking summer vacations. Cliff-Hanging Home with Cantilevered Pool  (images via: marc gerritsen) Talk about dream houses – this jaw-dropping ultramodern residence in Thailand not only perches on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean, it’s got a shimmering cantilevered infinity pool that seems like it extends out forever into the sea. Designed by Original Vision, the home features stacked levels that lift the living spaces high above the tree level, providing the best views possible. Ubud Hanging Gardens Hotel, Bali  (images via: freshome) Swimming pools don’t get much more scenic than this. The Ubud Hanging Gardens Hotel in Bali has a towering, multi-leveled infinity pool that looks like a natural cliffside and was in fact designed to mimic the surrounding hills. In addition to the two main pools, each of the 38 guest rooms at Ubud has its own mini infinity pool with views of the nearby Pura Penataran Dalem Segara temple. Hill House with Amazing Edgeless Pool  (images via: malik architecture) With views of both the sea and the city of Mumbai and a stunning wrap-around rooftop-deck infinity pool, this unusual geometric house design has it all. While the exterior of the house is a bit eclectic to say the least, the pool more than makes up for it. Lifting the pool above ground level must give the sense of swimming in the sky, especially given the house’s location on top of a hill. Jade Mountain, St. Lucia  (images via: jademountain.com) Another tempting resort with an infinity pool for each room is Jade Mountain in St. Lucia, where the views are almost too gorgeous to be believed. The pools are referred to as ‘sanctuaries’ and are classified as ‘stars’, ‘moons’, ‘suns’ and ‘galaxies’ according to size. A night experiencing one of these pools for yourself will range between $950 and $2,700. Villa Mayavee, Phuket, Thailand  (images via: inspire first) A private modern residence in Phuket, Thailand, Villa Mayavee has a beautiful slatted wood exterior and lots of glass for looking out at those enviable views of the ocean, but more importantly, check out that pool! Situated between floors, the large infinity pool seems to spill out of the house itself. Hotel Caruso, Ravello, Italy  (images via: citalia.com) Renowned for its spectacular rocky cliffs overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, Italy’s Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world. At Hotel Caruso in Ravello, guests can enjoy these views from a heated infinity pool on a clifftop 1,000 feet above sea level. The modern pool is a stunning contrast beside the historic 11th century hotel, a former palazzo. Astarte Suites, Santorini  (images via: freshome) What better way to contemplate the natural beauty of Santorini than from a sparkling pool with cliffside views? The Greek island’s Astarte Suites mimics the blue of the ocean and the rocky landscape with its pools and stone pillars. Langham Place Miora Resort & Spa, Phuket  (images via: phuket-miora.langhamplacehotels.com) One of Thailand’s prettiest pools is at Langham Place Miora Resort & Spa, located in Phuket. Overlooking the ocean as these resorts typically do, the pool wraps around the exterior of the resort – on the second floor. Each of the 78 designer villas also has its own private plunge pool with retractible floating dining tables. Huvafen Fushi, Maldives  (images via: only exclusive travel) Studded with submerged lights and extending out right over a private lagoon in the Indian Ocean, the Huvafen Fushi Resort’s zero-edge pool is a fantasy swimming experience. Just like many of these other high-dollar resorts, Huvafen Fushi’s 43 private bungalows each have their own smaller pool, as well. The resort also has an incredible underwater spa with glass walls that give relaxed patrons dreamy views of passing marine life. Hemeroscopium House Rooftop Infinity Pool  (images via: home-designing) Few homeowners can boast not only of a conventional in-ground swimming pool, but also a rooftop infinity pool that cantilevers out over the grass. Hemeroscopium House by Ensamble Studios is a prefabricated concrete house built from three huge I-beams, two segments of an irrigation canal and two steel girders for a highly unusual look. It took just a week to assemble. Intercontinental Hotel, Hong Kong  (images via: intercontinental hotel, designsxtra) And now for something completely different: an infinity pool that overlooks not some tropical paradise, but the bustling urban metropolis of Hong Kong – from a third-floor deck. This glass-walled pool still has the feel of a luxury vacation, of course, not just because of the pool itself and the hotel’s many amenities but because of the stretch of water that separates the hotel from the city. Hotel Joule, Texas  (images via: urban fabric, lost at e minor) Swim out to the glass end wall of the cantilevered rooftop pool at the 10-story Hotel Joule and you’ll feel like you’re about to spill out into the streets of downtown Dallas, Texas. The pool juts out eight feet beyond the exterior walls of the hotel, enhancing the experience. The sound of a waterfall just below you, as the infinity pool you’re relaxing in spills over into a decorative fountain basin? Check. All the incredible sights of tropical Tahiti? Check, check, check. If you’re lucky enough to stay in a place like this, even for a night, you’re lucky enough. Not only is this nearly 500-foot-long pool set into a rooftop skypark, 679 feet above the ground, but it’s an infinity pool, giving swimmers the feeling that they could swim right off the edge of the building. The pool looks out onto one of the world’s most modern cities, which is brilliantly illuminated once the sun goes down.” Natural Infinity Pools of Pamukkale, Turkey  (images via: dreaming traveller) As if man-made infinity pools weren’t cool enough, there are also natural edgeless pools that will take your breath away with their beauty. Perhaps the most stunning example is the cliffside hot springs of Pamukkale, Turkey, where falling mineral water rich in calcium has carved basins and stalactites into the rock and turned the entire area snow-white. Visitors are no longer allowed to swim in the pools, as the site is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Want More? معماری Abandoned Hollywood Theater Hidden Above NY Shop  As a bodega in New York’s East Village closes and questions arise about the historical building’s fate, a photographer has captured a hidden gem located on the floor above the shop: an abandoned theater, which was in operation between 1926 and 1959. The photos, by Kevin Shea Adams, show what has become of Avenue A Theater above East Village Farm.   The exterior, which is a blank wall of windowless brick, gives little clues as to what may be inside, but neighborhood residents who remembered the old theater longed to get a glimpse of what might remain.   Adams’ photos reveal that the theater has been in use as a functional store room for the bodega. Ornate details like ceiling tins and relief carvings contrast with pallets covered in cardboard boxes. Without attention and restoration, the theater has inevitably fallen into disrepair. Sadly, as the bodega closes, the owners of the building reportedly plan to demolish the whole structure to make way for new development.   Another person who got to see the inside told EV Grieve, “I’m not sure the building is worth saving—the cool parts of it seem really run down and unusable—but the ornate period works need to be preserved as best as they can. I would love to have a theater there, but I suspect it’s headed for new housing.” Want More? معماری Billboard House: Reclaiming Sky-High Commercial Space  Some billboards are just begging to be subverted, while others take us by surprise with their creativity and ingenuity. But whether you hate these humongous advertising platforms or think they’re an important part of modern society, billboards probably aren’t going away anytime soon. That’s why design team Apostrophy’s has attempted to make them more multi-purpose with the intriguing Billboard House.   Currently on display in Bangkok, Thailand for the Baan Iae Suan Fair, ‘Billboard House’ preserves the current advertising function of billboards, but adds an extra element: an elevated private domicile. Apostrophy’s explains that all three parties would benefit from this arrangement: the advertisers and billboard agencies who still get what they need out of the billboard, and the owner/dweller, who gets an extra income from the advertising rent.   The multi-story home is surprisingly spacious, and the views certainly can’t be beat. Rather than a conventional billboard post, the home sits on a trailer base that enables it to be moved when necessary. Solar cells on the roof provide energy, and the rails offer space to grow hydroponic plants.   While not everyone would be crazy about having their home plastered with ads (especially if those ads were offensive or objectionable), such an arrangement democratizes the space that is currently given over to advertisig in cramped urban locations, making smart use of it. That is, as long as these homes are replacing existing billboards and not just adding even more visual clutter. Want More? معماری Frying-Pan Planets? Dirty-Dish Art Photography  Have you ever looked at a scratched, worn-down frying pan and thought, ‘hey, that looks like a planet’? Artist Christopher Jonassen did, and the photos that he has taken are surprisingly celestial.     In a series called ‘Devour’, the Norway-based photographer gives these everyday domestic tools, which are not exactly known for beauty or glamour, an air of mystery. They do look surprisingly otherworldly, the scratches from utensils and too-tough cleaning methods translating into the texture that we see on images of planets taken from satellites. معماری City-Shaped Design: 13 Urban-Inspired Objects  Despite the crowded sidewalks, the cacophony of traffic and the sky-high cost of living, there’s no denying the romanticism and sheer energy of big cities like New York, Paris, London and Tokyo. And within those cities, even in the most run-down back alleys, there’s a certain gritty beauty. See the qualities and aesthetics that inspire fierce loyalty in urbanites brought to everyday objects in these 13 cool city-shaped and urban-inspired designs. City Water: Bottles with Neighborhood Maps  (images via: samal design) Product designer Dzmitry Samal came up with the concept for ‘City Water’, a water bottle printed with a map of the city from which the water was sourced. Considering that many bottled water companies aren’t exactly forthcoming about their sources – even using terminology that calls springs to mind, despite the fact that the water came from municipal sources – a bottle like this would provide a refreshing splash of honesty. Urban Metrobowls: Street-Shaped Metal Serving Bowls  (images via: roije) Organic yet structured, city grids can be quite visually interesting, so it’s nice to see them put proudly on display. Designer Frederik Joije creates free-form serving bowls shaped like the relatively rounded city of Amsterdam, and also the elongated fish-like Manhattan island. Cut-Out Maps by Karen O’Leary  (images via: studio kmo) Artist Karen O’Leary painstakingly cuts amazingly detailed maps of New York, Paris and London into delicate paper webs. O’Leary removes all land and water so that only the streets are left. “These maps reveal the density and delicacy of a modern city with a single element and infinite subtleties.” Urban Drift Desk Organizer  (images via: mocoloco) This desk organizer by Rob Southcott is shaped like a miniature skyline, an ideal addition to the desk of a proud urbanite. “This small anonymous city skyline is a useful space to store a variety of day to day objects. Placing items in amongst the cites skyscrapers helps you organize and store your belongings.” Cats Attack! Scratching Post  (images via: think geek) Any cat can become the star of your own little B-movie with the geektastic Cats Attack! scratching post, shaped like three urban towers in a cityscape. ThinkGeek even has quite an amazing little story to go with the product. “The year was 1954, and the top three concerns in the United States were as follows: Atom bombs destroying our cities, communists turning our citizenry into mindless zombies, and atomic zombie cats destroying our cities. Though you may not find records of it in the local newspapers (it was classified, hello?), cats were herded into great camps for study, just in case one or more of them mutated into horrifying beasts.” “These cats, embittered by their experiences, never forgot the mistreatment they received. So now, they watch. Always vigilant. They wait for their opportunity to attack. They wait and train. They skulk and sneak, climb and leap, slash bite and scratch. Often, they practice their scratching with any available vertical surface – usually your furniture. This practice often destroys the things you love. Cats don’t care. Topped with a miniature Japanese street, complete with a delicate little tree, the power strip was created for the 2010 graduate show at the Kyoto University of Art and Design. Robber Baron Clock by Studio Job  (images via: moss gallery) Referring to the bankers and industrialists who played big roles in the industrial revolution at the end of the 19th century, the ‘Robber Baron’ series by Studio Job includes this awesome clock, a model of a mansion ‘supported by gilded oil barrels’. Historic City View Handkerchiefs by MUJI  (images via: muji.us) Wear your love for the world’s greatest cities around your neck or in your pocket. Japan’s MUJI design offers handkerchiefs printed with historic maps of Tokyo, New York and Paris from the 19th century. City-Shaped Ring Designs by Phillipe Tournaire  (images via: phillipe tournaire) Wear your love for architecture on your finger with platinum or gold diamond rings shaped like buildings. Parisian jeweler Philippe Tournaire recreates structures from around the world including his home city, Moscow, New York and more, and has even made replicas of entire city blocks. Metropolis: Household Objects Shaped Like Skyscrapers  (images via: design milk) Design firm Lladro offers a series of functional objects including mirrors, boxes, vases and lamps all in the shape of buildings inspired by Moorish, Art Deco and other styles of architecture. معماری Terrific Tech: 10 Futuristic Advances in Robotics  Everyone loves a great robot story. Whether the robots are cuddly, intimidating, smart, or scary, they never fail to capture our attention. These bots range from updates on older technology to totally new inventions to futuristic concepts that haven’t even been built yet. Step into the future as you peruse some of the world’s most awesome recent robot advances. Depression-Fighting Babyloid  As humans get older, they often become susceptible to depression. Other than drugs and counseling, what can be done for seniors in need of help? Giving them something to take care of might be the answer. The Babyloid robot, developed by researchers at Chukyo University in Japan, promises to keep older people feeling happy and fulfilled just by virtue of its adorable robot presence. Babyloid cries, laughs and sleeps like a human baby, letting older folks tend to its every need. Just 90 minutes a day with the sweet little robot has been shown to increase the moods of nursing home patients. Self-Assembling Robot Furniture  Thanks to Ikea and other purveyors of flat-pack furniture, most of us are used to putting our own furniture together in order to save a few dollars. But the Roombots are – more or less – furniture that assembles itself. Developed by Swiss BioRobotics Laboratory, this fantastic set of roving robots rolls into position and assembles into whatever piece of furniture you need at that moment. Each component is a small robot and they all work together to invent and re-invent furniture where and when it is needed. And when you don’t need a table, chair, desk or other object, the Roombots can simply take the form of a wall. The Human Consciousness Robot  As our proficiency in robot programming grows, so does the desire to create something that is almost human. Bina48 is a robot endowed with the personality of a real human…who is also named Bina, of course. The human Bina spent many hours with robot Bina, having “conversations” and uploading her memories and personality to the robot head. The somewhat-creepy project is the work of the Terasem Movement, an organization that seeks to prevent the finality of death by allowing humans to store their consciousness in technology, where it will live on forever. Wi-Fi Swarm  In times of emergency when communications systems fail, a reliable alternative is needed right away. Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne believe that swarming flying robots could be just the alternative we need. The flying robots could form fleeting wireless networks by virtue of a small module in the wing of each unit. The modules would emit wireless signals to allow communication between rescue workers on the ground, probably allowing them to save many more lives than they could have without adequate communication. Robotic Weight Loss Coach  Losing weight is never easy, but it’s even more challenging when you try to do it on your own. That’s why Autom, this adorable big-eyed robot, wants to know all about you. She asks questions about your food intake and activity levels every day, then gives you tips on getting and staying healthy. Autom works on the idea that humans are much more likely to stick to their goals if they have a buddy to keep them accountable and on track. Terminator as a Baby Have you ever wondered what the T-1000 would have looked like if it had ever gone through an infant stage? Probably a lot like this horrifying bot. The skinless robot baby was actually filmed while it was still a work in progress; later it was given skin and used as a human “baby” on a television show. And as the above video shows, its movements were creepily realistic. According to the special effects studio that made this awesome abomination, the clients could not believe it wasn’t a real baby when seeing it for the first time. Seeing Eye Dog-Bots  Raising and training helper dogs for seeing impaired people takes a lot of time and a lot of money, and the dogs don’t have a very long professional life. So how about using technology to lead visually impaired humans around safely? The Japanese engineering firm NSK developed a line of quadruped robots that could eventually be used as a substitute for guide dogs. GPS and proximity sensors all over the robots’ bodies would let them steer their masters safely to wherever they need to go. A commercial version is still quite a way in the future as safety tests are still being carried out, but the “dogs” can already climb and descend stairs with ease. Outsourced English-Teaching Robots  Some South Korean students are learning English from outsourced teachers who happen to be based in the Philippines – but the teachers have a constant classroom presence in the form of egg-shaped robots. The bots feature screens that display nondescript Caucasian faces to the students while cameras and microphones allow the teachers to see and hear everything that’s happening in the classroom. The schools are happy because the robot teachers are cheaper than human teachers, and the students are happy because many of them find a robot less intimidating than a human teacher. Insect-Inspired Swarming Robots  Sending one robot into enemy territory to gather intelligence? Way too financially risky. Sending hundreds or even thousands of tiny, cheap, easily replaceable robots? Much smarter. Researchers are developing itty-bitty solar-powered robots that could move in swarm formations to gather data from targets…and it wouldn’t matter much if some were lost or destroyed in the process because they would be so cheap to produce. Next-Generation Telepresence Robot  Robots that let users essentially be in two places at once are immensely useful, and the Telesar V is even more amazing than the rest. The telexistence robot lets a user see, hear and even feel its environment, even when the user is physically very far away. The head-mounted 3D display and tactile gloves work to transmit the three senses, giving the user an unprecedented amount of data that could be used for a mind-boggling array of practical applications.
